Snow accumulation on solar panels stops power production, increases structural loads on roofs, and directly increases GHGs from fossil burning power plants who must take on the additional load. Snow Eliminators stop snow accumulation on solar panels by keeping a small area clear of snow all night so the sun can finish the job the next day. A single IMS deicer can last all season with one refill, is hand washable, and reuseable for years.
Laying an IMS onto the roof or across a solar panels top
will melt through the snow and ice and create a channel for water to flow off.
Shown below are three unprotected and one IMS protected solar panel during several  overcast days of snowfall in 2011.

HOW THE IMS WORKS
The IMS Prevents Snow accumulation and Ice Dams on Solar Panels and Roofs .
It is designed  for use on flat or sloped PV panels, roofs, or steps. The socks are shipped empty, and made of heavy-duty polyester with unattached velcro wrap seals.  They typically hold 3-16 pounds of EZDEICER each. They are easy to fill, easy to attach to roof or  PV panel and easy to  remove at the end of winter.  You fill the bags with ice melt as needed.
    * Suitable for all roofs , solar panels, or steps
    * Large, perforated, velcro sealed socks that can be filled with ice melt
    * Place socks just prior to freezing or inclement weather
    * De-icing melt is not included (
www.EZDEICER.com)
    * Easy attachment to any surface (throw cord is not included).
    * Refill with non-corrosive
EZDEICER as needed
    * Socks last for years
Note:
Refills may be needed when there is repeated, excessive precipitation.
When used as directed, a small amount of EZDEICER dissolves in the sock proportional to the snow that falls on the sock.  The snow melts and makes a tiny amount of liquid (most of it  evaporates)  about as corrosive as rain water and less corrosive than "acid rain."
DO NOT SPREAD ICE MELT WHERE IT CAN DIRECTLY TOUCH SURFACES.
KEEP IT INSIDE THE IMS !
ICE MELT SOCK PLACEMENT
Typical 3 lb., 36 inch, Ice Melt Sock lasts for months*. (*based on melt of
20-40 sq. yds. of roof snow per sock used.)
Clear the snow. At about every 3-10 ft along the edge of the roof or PV top, place an ice melt sock across the ice dam. On roofs place IMS in a vertical line down to the edge of the roof. Use noncorrosive de-icers (see
www.EZDeicer.com ).
Refill as necessary .

DO NOT USE CORROSIVE ACETATE ICE MELT
The United States Environmental Protection Agency studied various ice melt properties  about 25 years ago and produced Water Pollution and Associated Effects From Street Salting available from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS# PB.222795/7BA).  The USPS has some good data as well.
